A dramatic mint error

T. Carisius, 46 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.59 g, 6 h), Rome. Head of the Sibyl Herophile to right, hair elaborately decorated with jewels and enclosed in a sling and tied with band. Rev. T•CARISIVS / [III•VIR] Sphinx seated to right. Babelon (Carisia) 11. Crawford 464/1. CRI 69. RBW 1613. Sydenham 983a. Beautifully toned. Flip-over double strike and with light scratches on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the private collection of the Swiss Archaeologist Philipp Reto Huser (1962-2025), privately acquired in Swiss coin trade over the past 30 years.


This coin is a so-called flip-over double strike, meaning that the flan was not removed between two strikes but flipped over and was restruck a second time.
